Our baby!
He’s lovely, but very noisy at night!
I want to write everything I remember about the birth, so here goes: Waters broke early hours of Monday morning (about 2.30 am), went to hospital, they kept me in as I was only 36 weeks and 5 days, stayed on antenatal ward. Got a few contractions, then it all stopped. About 2 days later started getting bad contractions in early hours of morning, went to labour ward as soon as a bed was free, then was induced with hormone drip to speed up labour. Had gas & air plus epidural (which was topped up a few times), and was in actual labour (the painful bit) for about 19 hours. Don’t remember a huge amount about it to be honest! Bob was amazing….very supportive and helpful (feeding me water etc.), I had several drips in my hands, and several lots of antibiotics (due to waters breaking early a rise in temperature). Had to have forceps delivery in the end, as he was back to back. I remember our baby being put on my tummy, I cried. I also remember having stitches, but I think I kept falling asleep at that point. Our lovely munchkin was born at 5.15 am on 8th September (08/09/10). He weighed 6lbs 4oz. We called him Alexander Matthew Barker.
Baby was fine, had trouble breathing initially, but it was sorted very quickly. Had to stay in hospital a couple more days due to the amount of blood loss (a lot, apparently), and swelling (me, not the baby). Finally came home on the Friday, after the hospital offered me a blood transfusion as iron levels were so low, I said no as I really just wanted to go home (had been there for 5 days). So have to take lots of iron tablets and eat healthily now. But I’m much better.
Alexander is adorable, even if he does keep me awake for most of the night.
Well, just over 6 weeks actually, until the baby is due. Everything is pretty much sorted out, just a few little things left to do. I’m still terrified of labour, but quite excited about coming home afterwards with a baby! I’m still not 100% convinced it’s a boy, but I’ll just have to wait and see now I suppose.
I’m getting a lot more backache and pain in my hips, especially at night or if I’ve been walking a lot. Apparently, that’s normal at this stage. Luckily, I’ve only put on a stone in weight (according to my midwife, that’s not too much), which hopefully means it won’t be too difficult to lose the excess weight afterwards. Although, it will be nearly Christmas….lots of nice food around, so we’ll see.
Today was my last day at work! I am 29 weeks and 3 days pregnant. Maternity pay/leave actually starts in August, but summer holiday starts today. I got a bit emotional and had a bit of a cry in the office…I’ll miss my job. I had a lovely Baby Shower at work yesterday, and got loads of presents, as well as lots of cake! A couple of the kids gave me biscuits and wine as well (for after the baby is born), it was really sweet.
So now I have several months off work. Next week The Big Tidy Up/Sort Everything Out Project starts. I have to find space for all of the baby’s stuff! Hospital bag is nearly all packed, just need to wash the baby clothes before I pack any of them. I think we have pretty much everything we need now, including cot bed and mattress, which arrived today. Also have to make Bob a Birthday pavlova.
I have temporarily given up OU work as well, so I can just concentrate on getting things ready for the baby. My brain can’t really cope with more than one thing at a time at the moment!
So, as of tomorrow I will be 27 weeks pregnant. We have a lot of baby stuff now, only need to get a few more bits (I think). Started packing hospital bag, just in case.
I’ll be finishing work in about 3 weeks, I’m planning to go back at the end of February, but probably only doing a couple of days a week…initially. To be honest, I’m glad I’m finishing soon, it’s getting very tiring! The heat isn’t helping either.
We decided on the name Alexander. Not 100% decided on middle-name yet though, but possibly Matthew.
I’m a bit concerned about the amount of coursework I have to do between now and end of September, there’s quite a lot! Hopefully, when I finish work, it’ll be a bit easier. I’m going to take a few months (maybe longer) away from my degree when the baby is born, I think I’ll need to.
Pushchair and car seat arrived today. Spent an hour and a half putting pushchair together…it’s virtually a tank! It fits in our boot (only just though), and is all in working order. There is quite a large (ever-expanding) pile of baby things in our Living Room, and a slightly smaller (rapidly expanding) pile in the Bedroom.
Received a lovely baby blanket from a friend, she knitted it herself, and a really lovely, soft teddy bear from my Fiance’s Mum (who has also knitted blankets and clothes for the baby).
Still haven’t definitely decided on a name, but we both like ‘Alexander’, so might end up going with that. We’ll see. Also need to choose a middle name.
Had my 20 week scan today, looks like we will bw having a baby boy!
I’m happy about this, but I had convinced myself it was a girl. I have 2 younger sisters, so I have an idea what to expect from a girl…I have no idea what to expect from a boy. Anyway, everything is fine, he seems healthy and kicks me on a regular basis!
I’m getting fatter, some of my maternity clothes fit me now. I’ll be finishing work in mid-July, and probably going back at the end of February next year. I’m quite glad, I’m finding work and coursework quite hard at the moment, and quite tiring. I’m also finding it very difficult to concentrate on anything.
I’m planning on buying a pushchair and car seat soon, but the amount of stuff I still need to get is a bit overwhelming to be honest. I’m sure it will all be ok, I’m probably worrying for no reason.
We haven’t decided on a name yet, had a few ideas, but nothing definite. On that note, I shall stop because I’m half asleep at the moment!
All my maternity clothes arrived, some of them are still too big, but I’m sure I’ll need them eventually! So far, baby stuff wise, I have bought:
Bottles
Breast Pump (manual, not electric…they scare me a bit)
Microwave Steriliser
Pack of 3 baby vest-type things
Nappy Disposal System (yet to arrive)
I’m trying to get a few little bits each month, then get the more expensive stuff nearer September. Most of it isn’t too expensive so far…although that may change.
I’ve felt the baby move quite a lot over the last few days, mainly in the evening and early in the morning. It sort of feels like it’s rolling over…very odd, in a good way. The only downside is my stomach muscles ache every now and then, I assume it’s because they are being stretched.
Went to see the Midwife this morning, everything is fine. Got to listen to the baby’s heartbeat, that was fine too. Next appointment will be with GP, just for a check-up.
Midwife talked about ante-natal classes, I’m not sure if I’ll bother with these. I’ve spoken to a few other people about it, and it seems that they are a bit pointless, you can get all the info. you need on the Internet or from books. Will have to have a think about it. Still waiting for my maternity clothes to arrive, although the ‘Bump bands’ arrived yesterday…haven’t really looked at them yet though. I’m also considering getting one of those V-shaped pillows, they’re supposed to help you sleep and be good for when you’re breast-feeding.
I’m so much better now! My tutor at the OU was very helpful and supportive about my issues with coursework, so that’s sorted. Illness has pretty much gone, as has general nausea & travel sickness (I think).
I’m seeing the Midwife on Thursday, just for a check-up I believe, and then next scan is in about a month. We’ll hopefully find out if it’s a boy or girl, I think it’s a girl, but everyone else seems to think it’s a boy.
My appetite is ridiculous, I get really hungry every couple of hours! Still get a bit tired by about 9.00pm, but usually can just lie in bed and watch TV for an hour or two before falling asleep. I get the odd ache in my back/legs/tummy etc, but it goes away fairly quickly. The headaches seem to have gone off as well, for now.
